I have used the trial version and am confident that it will be able to retrieve userids and passwords even though I no longer have the system.mdw file. Once I have the userids and passwords, how do I create a new system.mdw that will work with the mdb? Can you recover the WID, PID, and SIDs that are needed to build the mdw file, or is there another way. Thank you.

Hello,

Access Password Pro allows you to recover user names and PIDs (also called user IDs) associated with database owner and objects owners. This information is required to recreate these user/users into new MDW (workgroup information) file.
MS Access user rights verification procedure is base on user SID and this SID is generated from user name and user PID. So users from different MDWs with the same name and PID have the same access rights (as well as SID).
WID is useless and stored in original MDW file only.

So all you have to do to access your user-level secured database is to re-create recovered users into new MDW file using user-names and PIDs recovered and login as database owner.
The exact step-by-step procedure is listed in Access Password help.

I purchased the Commeercial license for Acess Password Pro last night.

Thank you for the explanation. I thought that the ID that was provided by Access Password was the password, but I saw that it was actually the PID. That explained a lot. I really learned quite a bit about Microsoft Access user level security.

Today I was able to get into two secured databases. One was an access 2.0 with tables, queries, forms, and reports. I was able to get into the main form. I didn't know what to do with it after that. The database is no longer used and I just used it for a test.

The second database was in Acdess 97 format and is the back-end containing only tables. So all I needed to do was remove security. It wasn't necessary to convert it to the current Access format. It worked perfectly.

The third database is a test database I created under Access 2003 (our curret version) and protected with user level security. I was able to get into it without the workgroup file, and remove security. However, when I tried to load it with a default workgroup, Access said that it was corrupted or improperly converted. I could still get into the original secured copy.

Now I just need to see if I can get my employeer to reimburse me for the license.......

Worked great ... mostly
