Hi,
I have this strange problem that popped up recently:
I have Windows XP Pro and I connect to my Lycos account using Outlook Express. All of a sudden, the login process started to fail - the username/password entry window started to appear and of course it did not accept the credentials I provided (in web-based interface everything worked alright). But there is more to that.
I tried opening other accounts (in Hotmail, for example, and that was before that weird mail abuse precaution that they introduced recently) and logging in using Outlook Express - with the same results!!! (i.e. - OE fails, web - OK). I tried different combinations: using Outlook instead of OE, even using some app that Lycos provide to automatically configure mail applications like OE. The outcome was the same: application-oriented approach always failed and the web-based login went without any problems.
The last thing I tried to do was to SWITCH TO ANOTHER WINDOWS ACCOUNT - AND THAT WORKED!!! Finally, mail applications could log on to web-based accounts with no problems.
But recently - today, in fact, the problem reared its ugly head again - this time in my new account!!!
Help, I don't know what to do anymore!!! |

Hello,
1) Try to scan your system for viruses using antivirus software (It’s always good way to start)
2) Check your XP internal (or third-party) firewall settings, Web and Main programs ports are not the same.
3) Also read following information from MS (error is not the same, but may be it will help you) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q264672 |

Hi,
First of all, thanks for your quick reply, I appreciate it a lot.
Second, unfortunately, none of your suggestions worked. I seem to have no viruses (at least that's what my Norton Antivirus tells me) and the problem remains even with the firewall disabled (by Symantec as well).
Any fresh new ideas will be greatly appreciated. |

Hello,
Unfortunately we are out of applicable generic ideas in your case.
There are no similar bug reports from Microsoft or in our support cases.
I think it’s your system (software) configuration specific error. That’s why there is almost nothing we can do remotely.
Sorry… |
